The Large Fjord Tour
A more extensive but comfortable guided walking tour along the Oslo waterfront covering all the most popular and important buildings, parks and developments from the Opera House to Aker Brygge
This fascinating architectural and cultural tour encompasses the little Fjord tour, Christian IV’s city centre, (the kvadraturen) and the new eastern waterfront, Bjørvika, where the Opera House, Munch museum and the new city library (Deichman Bjørvika) rub shoulders with award-winning domestic architecture.
Once referred to as ‘the kitchen entrance to Oslo’, Bjørvika was formerly a port area. In just two decades, its million square meters have been transformed into a lively blend of housing, office spaces, public services, shopping and culture. Here, the city’s primary river, Akerselva, which marks the boundary between east and west Oslo, finds its way to the fjord. A carefully designed urban riverscape, sensitively planted with native vegetation and featuring recreational areas, gives architectural form to the banks.
The large fjord tour not only offers excellent insights into contemporary architecture, landscape architecture and city planning in Oslo, but also, more broadly, into Norwegian culture and history. Insite visits may be organised to explore the architecture more deeply, while the tour can be customised in advance to accommodate individual interests and wishes. Take a closer look, for example, at contemporary housing, city development and transformation and sustainability in Norwegian architecture.
The large fjord tour is a wide-reaching guided walking tour in central Oslo and covers a distance of about 2-3 km. To get the most out of your tour, make sure you have comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the weather and time of year.
