Norwegian Wood

A round trip in Oslo that explores not only traditional Norwegian timber architecture, but also new, innovative solutions in mass timber construction. The Tour visits both housing projects and new office buildings.

Building in wood has deep roots in Norwegian tradition, but today this legacy is being reimagined through a wave of bold, innovative timber architecture. Across Oslo, pioneering projects are showcasing how sustainable materials can shape the cities of tomorrow - and they’re waiting to be explored.

Begin your journey at Valle Wood, Oslo’s first mass timber office building. Rising seven stories high, this landmark opened in 2020 and was designed by Lund+Slaatto Arkitekter. Just a short distance away, you’ll find HasleTre — a visionary office building that embodies circular construction principles. Completed in 2022 by OsloTre, its wooden structure extends from the core to the façade, and it has been designed to be fully dismantled and reused, setting a new standard for sustainable design.

The tour continues with inspiring examples of timber housing. At Blindern Studenthus, more than 300 students live in crafted wooden residences. Fyrstikkbakken 14 stands as a bold residential development with up to 10 floors and 163 apartments, designed by LINK Arkitektur - a testament to how timber can scale to urban living.

And in the vibrant district of Grünerløkka, a five-storey infill housing project pushes the boundaries even further. Here, sustainability is not just built into the structure — it’s woven into everyday life, encouraging residents to live in harmony with the environment.
