Discover the contemporary architecture and Hanseatic history of Norway’s former capital, Bergen. This comfortable walking tour explores the streets and waterfront from world-famous Bryggen to the modern city centre.
Starting in the Bergenhus district – the old mediaeval quarter of the early kings and clerics – we follow the waterfront to Unesco-listed Bryggen (12th til early 17th century) where the wooden houses of the Hanseatic merchants still stand. We cross Fisketorget, the lively and popular fish market in the heart of theVågen district and make our way towards the modern city centre, Ole Bulls Plass and Torgalmeningen. Characterized by its classical 19th century rectangular grid pattern, and featuring impressive buildings from the last two centuries, the stand-out architectural gem of the city centre is Per Grieg’s Sundt shopping mall, a flagship of Norwegian functionalism, now listed, which opened in 1938.
We next move on towards Lille Lungegårdsvann, the small lake that lies at the heart of modern Bergen and the adjoining Festplassen (‘Festivity Square’). A little further and we come to Grieghallen, an iconic concert hall from the late 70s, designed by Knud Munk and named after the great Norwegian composer Edward Grieg.
This historical and architectural walk can be extended to a whole day tour and to include a trip on the funicular railway (an engineering feat in itself) to the top of Mount Fløyen. As with all Insite experiences, the tour may be customised to customers’ particular interests.
